A smart home is not an off-the-shelf product with a fixed price. It is a combination of devices, wiring, configuration and labour, fitted to a specific space and to the way a specific family lives. That is why two homes of the same size can cost very different amounts.
This guide aims to give you a realistic first picture, so you can go into the conversation knowing what to ask.
What drives the cost
Size and layout of the home
More rooms mean more switches, sensors and control points. Layout matters too: a two-storey house with thick concrete walls usually needs more Wi-Fi access points and signal repeaters than an open-plan flat of the same size.
Wireless or wired
In an existing home we work mostly wirelessly: smart switches behind your current ones, battery sensors, motors on existing shutters. It is quick and needs no building work. Wired infrastructure such as KNX costs more in materials and labour, but it is the most robust option when the walls are already open.
Which systems you want
Lighting and climate are usually the first step and the most affordable. Cameras, alarm, multi-room audio, home cinema, solar and EV charging add cost depending on the number of points and the quality of equipment.
New build or existing home
In a new build or major renovation, the design is done on the drawings, together with your architect and electrician. The cost per point is often lower because cables go in before the walls are closed. In an existing home you pay for less infrastructure, but there are limits to what can be done without building work.
Equipment tier
A switch, a camera or a speaker comes in very different price bands. We recommend equipment we have tested, and where there is a choice we show you the difference between a good standard option and a premium one.
What a NIX quote includes
The quote you receive after the survey is fixed-price and sets out in detail:
- Survey: a visit to your home, checking wiring, electrical panel and Wi-Fi coverage. It is free.
- Design: a room-by-room plan with devices, scenes and automations.
- Devices: every device with model and quantity, including the NIX Hub.
- Installation: our technicians' work on site.
- Configuration: hub setup, scenes, automations, an app for the whole family.
- Handover: a walkthrough for everyone in the home, so they know how it works.
- Warranty: on equipment and workmanship, on the terms stated in the quote.
If something is not explicitly mentioned in the quote, ask us before you sign. We would rather discuss it then than afterwards.
Indicative ranges per package
The figures below are very broad ranges, to give you a sense of scale. The actual price for your home could sit anywhere within these ranges, or outside them, depending on the factors described above.
| Package | For | Indicative range |
|---|---|---|
| Essentials | Flats, mostly wireless, about 1 day to install | €1,500–4,000 |
| Comfort | Family homes, lighting and climate in every room, security, energy | €5,000–15,000 |
| Signature | Villas and new builds, wired infrastructure, audio, cinema, outdoor spaces | from €18,000 |
Important
Prices are indicative and exclude VAT. The final price is given after the survey. These are starting estimates that NIX will confirm with a written, fixed-price quote for your home.
For a more personal estimate, the cost estimator asks for your home size and systems and gives you an indicative range in a few minutes.
How to do it in phases
It does not all have to happen at once. Because every package runs on the same NIX Hub, you can start small and add more later without throwing anything away. A common sequence is:
- Foundation: NIX Hub, network and lighting in the main rooms.
- Comfort: climate and shutters, with morning, evening and away scenes.
- Security: sensors, alarm, cameras, smart lock.
- Energy and outdoors: consumption monitoring, solar, garden, EV charging.
If you are planning a renovation in future, tell us from the start. We can run conduit and cables now, so the next phase costs less.
Running costs after installation
The NIX Hub runs locally, inside your home. There is no mandatory monthly subscription for lights, climate or alarm to work, and camera recordings are stored on a recorder at home, with no cloud subscription.
Typical ongoing costs are small: sensor batteries every few years and the electricity the equipment itself uses. If you add Starlink backup, there is the corresponding service subscription.
Optionally, we offer a care plan: tested software updates, remote support and scene changes as your needs change. The system keeps working normally without it.
The next step
The quickest route to a reliable price is the survey. It takes about an hour, is free with no obligation, and you have a written quote within a week. If you would like an estimate first, start with the cost estimator.
